Once Lionheart, now shell of ghost–
A battered rock against a restless coast
I’ll leave this world adrift in briney deep.
I know not where now I will go,
Or what dreams I will inhabit now
Or what vistas, calm or churning, I will see
My deepest thanks to all of you,
Oh kin and kind, you faithful crew
So remember (though the clay no longer breathes):
That even laid upon the burnin’ coals
With the other sorry, brick-red souls
I won’t forget the blessings given me.
Found scrawled in a waterlogged journal; the name of the ship or any other identification of the Captain or Crew is unfortunately illegible.
